AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Between 2013 and 2014, the number of victims of assault recorded in the Australian Capital Territory decreased by 7.3% (to 1,705 victims). The victimisation rate decreased from 482.6 victims per 100,000 people in 2013, to 441.7 victims per 100,000 people in 2014.

In the Australian Capital Territory during 2014:
  • Over a quarter (26% or 449 victims) of all assault victims were aged between 25 and 34 years;
  • Males accounted for 52% (895 victims) of recorded victims of assault in 2014;
  • Nearly half of male victims of assault knew the offender (46% or 411 victims), whilst 35% of male assault victims (309 victims) identified the offender as a stranger;
  • More than four in five (81% or 643 victims) female assault victims knew the offender, whilst 13% of female assault victims (103 victims) identified the offender as a stranger;
  • Male assault victims were most likely to have experienced victimisation at a community location (46% or 409 victims) and female assault victims were most likely to have experienced victimisation at a residential location (59% or 468 victims); and
  • More than four in five victims of assault (84% or 1,434 victims) reported that no weapon was used by the offender.
